Liz is taking a well-deserved day off from writing today. And since this is my own experience, I thought it would be appropriate for me to share it with you. I found Yummly earlier this year and bookmarked it for future use—like I do with many other food/cooking resources. What I didn’t realize at the time was how good a resource it really was!
Since starting the blog, Yummly has become one of our favourite food sites for inspiration! Yummly is one of the most popular food sites in the world with over 15 million visitors per month. Crazy, right! Don’t forget to visit our Photos & Food Profile on Yummly!
We love Yummly for a few different reasons. As a home cook, I use it often for searching recipes for a family meal, or for ideas for a new recipe we might be developing for the blog. Liz and I both love it for the mouth-watering photography too! It’s so easy to get lost for hours exploring the huge variety of great food shots.
Searching for great recipes is so easy! You type in your search term i.e. “Tomato Sauce”, and boom! A ton of results with options for filtering down to the perfect recipe. You can choose to add ingredients into your search or add terms you don’t want in your recipe. You can also add time, occasion, diet, allergies, and more into your search to make sure you’re getting exactly what you’re looking for.
In addition to all the great recipes and search tools, there are other features we love. For instance, just “Yum” a picture on their site and voilà, it’s in your Recipe Box (you need to create a free account first). Also, you can setup collections to help you better categorize your recipe choices (Yums). There’s also a community area where you can ask other cooks questions about ingredients, tecniques or anything else food related you can think of.
Yet another cool feature is that you can add your very own recipes to your Recipe Box (maybe in a “my recipes” collection), for future use. This is a great way to document all the food you’ve created. We don’t use this feature because we have our blog, but I can see it being super handy for home cooks. Add it in one place, and access it from many places.
In addition to my love of cooking, I’m also a bit of a tech geek. So this last feature is the one that wins the “coolness” award in my opinion. You can add a “Yum Bookmarklet” to your browser (info here: http://www.yummly.com/bookmarklet) that allows you to easily add any recipe from anywhere on the web to your Yummly Recipe Box… cool, right!
If you haven’t tried Yummly yet, what are you waiting for? Try it out and let us know what you think. If you like our recipes here on the Photos & Food blog, don’t forget to Yum them right from the recipe (look for the Yum icon on the top right side of each recipe). Yummly is also available as an app for your smart phones or tablets.
Have a Yummly great day!
