Well hello there!
It’s been a while since we’ve made some noise here. We’re back… and we’ve got some delicious steak for you today.
We missed this
I think our blog is in our blood now (especially Nelson’s). A few weeks ago, Nelson and I made a conscious decision to take a short break so we could each focus on getting through some big projects at work and then take a break as a family; and catch our breath. And we did that—and it was the right thing to do, but it was interesting that both of us missed working on the blog over the last few weeks. While this is a hobby for us (more of a passion project really), I think Nelson, especially, missed thinking up and trying out new recipes and sharing them on the blog. It’s funny how something that adds “work” to our life is also something we miss when it’s not there. Does this make sense? Maybe it’s a “blogger thing”. What does this make us? Dedicated? Gluttons for pressure? Whatever… it’s our thing, I guess.
Ahh… vacation time
We really needed that! We spent a week in paradise. Not the ‘palm tree-lined beach resort in the Caribbean’ kind of paradise. No, it was a simple cottage on a lake in Ontario. Beautiful. Peaceful. Perfect. We didn’t worry about deadlines, alarm clocks, and traffic. Nope… just relaxing, sitting by a lake, swimming, boating, fishing, grilling, and enjoying sunsets and campfires. Now that’s a recipe I highly recommend.
Work-Life Balance…
When you feel your scale tipping too far to the ‘work’ side, it’s time to adjust things. That was the case for us and our vacation was just what we needed to realign and reconnect as a family. I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again now—take time to catch your breath, slow down and enjoy time with those you love. You don’t need to venture to far away places to achieve that. It can be as simple as taking a walk in nature, canoeing on a quiet lake, unplugging from technology, and sharing a meal together. That’s what works for us… eating and chatting together at the dinner table. Find your balance, and eat well, friends.

This steak recipe is easy to make and the steaks come out tender and juicy! Why pay triple the price when you can make restaurant quality steaks at home?
- 6 strip loin steaks (roughly 4.4 lbs or 2 kg)
- 3 tsp coarse salt
- 2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
-
Heat the grill to about 500 ºF
-
Place the 6 steaks on a large clean cutting board and let them sit at room temperature between 20 and 30 minutes.
-
Sprinkle the coarse salt and black pepper evenly over both sides of the steak.
-
Drizzle the oil over both sides of the steak and pat down to make sure there's oil, salt and pepper coating all sides of the steaks.
-
Place the steaks on the hot grill on a 45 degree angle to the grill grates and close the BBQ lid.
-
After 6 minutes, lift the lid and flip the steaks over, once again on a 45 degree angle to the grill grates and close the BBQ lid.
-
Open the lid and test the centre of the steaks with a meat thermometer. Your steaks should be close to 145 ºF for medium. This is our favourite internal temperature. If you prefer your steaks medium rare, reduce the cooking time by 1 to 2 minutes per side and aim for 135 ºF.
-
Move the steaks to a serving dish and tent with aluminum foil for about 10 minutes. Letting them rest will give you juicier steaks.
-
Serve the steaks with compound butter or sauce (try our chimichurri sauce) and your favourite side dish. Enjoy!
- Bringing the steaks to room temperature before grilling them and letting them rest after they're cooked is crucial to making perfect steaks.
- For cross grill marks, flip the steaks twice per side and cook for 3 minutes each time.
